Chiropractor (DC)

Dr. Ryan Shum is a graduate with a Honors Bachelor of Kinesiology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. At McMaster, his studies included an emphasis on sports injury management and functional anatomy and rehabilitation as well as his research interest included skeletal muscle protein metabolism and resistance exercise. Dr. Shum graduated from New York Chiropractic College with dual degrees in Masters of Science in Applied Clinical Nutrition and a Doctorate of Chiropractic. His clinical studies and rotations included the Miami VA Hospital’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. At this hospital, Dr. Shum coupled chiropractic and acupuncture treatment techniques to improve quality of life for patients, mostly returning US Forces.

Dr. Shum emphasizes an integrative, functional evidence based orthopaedic approach in chiropractic care with a focus on improved outcomes and patient centered care. He is certified in Active Release Technique (ART©), Graston Instrument Soft Tissue Mobilization (GISTM) and Functional and Kinetic Treatment through Provocation and Motion (FAKTR-PM). He is also a certified SpiderTech Kinesiology Taping provider and a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Dr. Shum’s training also includes Contemporary Medical Acupuncture, which was studied at McMaster University Medical School’s Dept of Anesthesia post graduate studies.

Dr. Shum has past been a consultant to the NHL’s Florida Panthers, NFL athletes, NCAA athletes, AVP Pro Beach Volleyball, Team USA Swimming and endurance athletes. He is also a past chairman for North Carolina Chiropractic Association’s (NCCA) Research Council. Currently he serves as chairman of NCCA’s Sports Council and is editor/contributor to Elevate Lifestyle magazine. Outside of practice, Dr. Shum enjoys following and playing a variety of sports including lacrosse, basketball, hockey, beach volleyball amongst others.
